BRUNSWICK, Ga. (Feb. 23, 2019) – The No. 20 Truett McConnell University softball team shutout and swept the College of Coastal Georgia on the road on Saturday afternoon (2-0, 3-0). The Lady Bears improved to 11-3 on the year while the Mariners fell to 7-5.
GAME ONE
After a scoreless four innings, senior lead off Kaitlynn Johnson tripled to deep right center to drive home freshman Alicia Price. Johnson went on to score on a defensive error by Coastal's second baseman to put the Lady Bears at a two run advantage (2-0).
The Mariners attempted to make a comeback in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third, junior pitcher Bethany Hyde forced a fly out to left field to keep Coastal scoreless. In fact, Hyde went on to strike out three batters in the bottom of the seventh to further secure the first win of the day.
The Lady Bears had zero defensive errors.
LEADERS
Hyde recorded her second complete game shutout of the season allowing five hits, three walks and striking out four. Hyde improved to 6-1 on the year.
Johnson and Sullivan recorded a hit apiece for the Lady Bears.
GAME TWO
TMU's first run of the game came in the top of the fourth when freshman Briley Lawson singled to right field. While the Mariners remained scoreless, senior Brie Levy doubled to deep left center field to score another run for the Lady Bears (2-0). Johnson's single up the middle in the seventh scored the third and final run of TMU's second shutout over the Mariners (3-0).
For the second game straight, the Lady Bears had no defensive errors.
LEADERS
The reigning AAC Pitcher of the Year, Karley Hobbs, also threw a complete shutout (her third this season) allowing four hits, three walks and striking out three. Hobbs allowed just one hit through the first five innings.
Johnson led going 2-for-4 while Levy, Lawson, Price and Morrison added a hit apiece.
