No. 20 Lady Bears split opening day

ALEXANDRIA, La. (Feb. 1, 2019) – The No. 20 Truett McConnell University softball team opened up their 2019 season at the Louisiana State University Alexandria Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Lady Bears dropped game one against LSU Alexandria 8-0 and bounced back with a win over Central Baptist College 3-2.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"I was real proud of how we came back after that first loss and how we kept our composure for game two," Head Coach Jenni Shepard said. "A number of freshmen were able to get their feet wet and get some experience. Anytime you pick up a win is a good day, but we expect the girls to play better tomorrow and as we continue through the season."

GAME ONE (8-0)

After a hitless and scoreless 1.5 innings, the Generals' right fielder hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second. TMU then went three up and three down as LSU Alexandria carried over their momentum to score two more runs in the third (4-0). Hitless TMU was unable to bounce back in the fourth and fifth innings as the Generals earned three more runs to score four runs which put the game out of reach (8-0).

Junior Bethany Hyde started for TMU on the mound allowing five hits and striking out four.

GAME TWO (3-2)

The Lady Bears got up on the board first in the bottom of the first (1-0). Kaitlynn Johnson led off with a bunt for a base hit and Briley Lawson singled to the infield for TMU's first two hits of the game. Alicia Price was walked with bases loaded which enabled the first run. The Lady Bears had another two-hit inning and came close to another run with runners on second and third with one out but TMU was unable to capitalize.

Central Baptist had a strong fourth inning earning three hits and two runs to take the lead (2-1) but Price was capable of running home on a wild throw to tie up the game (2-2). The game was sent into extra innings after both teams went scoreless through the seventh. Price beat out an infield single for her first collegiate hit that sent senior Brie Levy home for the winning run (3-2).

Reigning AAC Co-Pitcher of the year Karley Hobbs pitched a complete game allowing four hits and striking out five.

Price tallied two RBI's in her second collegiate career game. Sara Sullivan and Levy also tallied a hit in Friday's win. The Bears outhit the Mustangs 6-4.
