Wilson’s double overtime free kick advances Lady Bears to semifinals

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Nov. 5, 2019) – With under a minute to go in the second overtime period, junior Tori Wilson sent the ball over the head of Brenau University's goalkeeper on a free kick to win 1-0 the Appalachian Athletic Conference quarterfinal round at the TMU Soccer Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Truett McConnell University women's soccer team, who is still receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25 poll, also defeated the Golden Tigers in the regular season 3-0. In addition, Tuesday's tournament win marks head coach David McDowell's 110th career win (2010-2019).

The Lady Bears will advance to the AAC semifinal round, which will take place at the TMU Soccer Complex against No. 4 seeded Milligan College. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.

TMU dominated possession as they outshot the No. 8 seeded Golden Tigers 28-3. In fact, the Lady Bears recorded 10 shots throughout both overtime periods while Brenau didn't shoot once. The closest TMU  got to scoring in the second half was when Lydia Williams struck back-to-back about two feet from the Brenau goalkeeper, but the keeper made two back-to-back impressive saves. The Lady Bears also earned seven corner kicks, which allowed some of TMU's 13 shots in the second half but TMU was ultimately unable to finish. Also note worthy, TMU earned 10 corner kicks while Brenau earned zero throughout all 109 minutes of play.

However, Wilson rose to the occasion with her 25-yard free kick that flew directly under the crossbar and into the net to win it for the No. 1 seeded Lady Bears.

Williams led the way with six shots, three on goal, while Jessica Lanier shot five, two on goal. Wilson and Jennifer McCall added three shots apiece.

TMU defeated their semifinal round opponent, Milligan College, 3-1 in the regular season.
