Men’s soccer wins in 2-1 decision at Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, Va. (Oct. 6, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University men's soccer team won their second Appalachian Athletic Conference game of the season on Sunday afternoon at Bluefield College 2-1. The win improved the Bears' overall season record to 3-6-2, 2-2-2 AAC.

According to the numbers, TMU dominated the AAC showdown on Bluefield's home field. The Bears outshot the Rams 8-3 in the first half, but went on to tally 10 shots in the second half all the while holding Bluefield to zero shots. The Bears also earned six corner kicks in comparison to Bluefield's one.

The Rams did score the first goal of the game in the first two minutes but that would be the last time Bluefield saw the back of the net. Although the Bears trailed by one at the half, sophomore Thomas Herwig received a cleared ball by a Bluefield defender and struck about 30 yards out to send the tying goal into the net (1-1). But 11 minutes later, fellow sophomore Trevor Fick won the ball inside the box to score the Bears' winning goal (2-1).

Javier Rodriguez recorded a total of nine shots, four on target, while Fick shot three, all on target. Dylan McKendry also added three shots. Senior Evan Gaffney earned two saves on the day.

Up next, TMU is on the road for two straight. First on the schedule is No. 23 Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7:00 p.m. The Bears will be at Kentucky Christian University on Saturday, Oct. 12.
