Bears fall in double overtime on penalty kick at Union

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 19, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University men's soccer team faced overtime for the eighth time this season in an Appalachian Athletic Conference road game at Union College on Saturday night. The Bears (4-7-4, 3-3-3 AAC) fell in the second overtime period 3-2 to the Bulldogs, who currently rank second in the AAC standings with an 8-1 record.

TMU was in fact the first team up on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute when Zayne Moore shot from just outside of the 18-yard box (1-0). Leading at halftime, the Bulldogs came back out to score a minute into the second half to tie it up 1-1. With 10 minutes to go in regulation, Javier Rodriguez found the feet of Trevor Fick in scoring position. Fick took a touch to his right and struck to find the back of the net one last time for the Bears (2-1). Union, however, was capable of scoring in the final minute of regulation (2-2), which forced the game into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, the Bulldogs scored on a penalty kick within two minutes of the second overtime period (2-3).

Fick led individually with four shots, two on target, while Dylan McKendry followed with three shots, one on target. Cristobal Montes added two shots himself and senior Evan Gaffney recorded a total of seven saves on the night.

Up next, the Bears are set to host Columbia International University for their regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 3:00 p.m.
