Bears Softball goes 2-2 at Thomas Tourney

THOMASVILLE, GA |
The Bears traveled to Thomasville, GA this past weekend to participate in a tournament at Thomas University. The Bears opened up early Friday morning against #23 Rio Grande University (Ohio). Rio Grande scored first in the bottom of the second after a hit and two TMU errors helped Rio to push one run across. TMU tied it up in the top of the fourth. Milly Martinet led off the inning with a single to left field. Sarah Wills subbed in to run for Martinet. Reba Jones bunted Wills over and reached on a Rio defensive error which allowed Wills  to advance to third on the wild throw. Freshman Montanna McGinnis pinch hit and hit a ground ball to second base that Wills was able to score on. Rio struck again in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run on two hits to take a 2-1 lead. That score would hold until the top of the seventh when TMU struck again. Macey Dunaway led off the inning with a single up the middle. Sara Sullivan then bunted for a base hit advancing Dunaway to second. Sarah Horne sacrifice bunted and moved the runners over to second and third. With one out, Kaitlynn Hay singled scoring Dunaway and advancing Sullivan to third base. Hay advanced to second on the throw to the plate. After a failed squeeze play, senior Emilia Martinet singled to right center scoring Hay. Two more singles by Reba Jones and Brie Levy would score another run and the Bears would go into the bottom of the seventh with a 4-2 lead. The Bears would make it an interesting bottom of the frame after allowing back to back singles, but a heads up defensive play by Jaden Morrison at short would get a force out at third. With runners at first and second and one out the Bears allowed a walk to load the bases. After a runner's interference call for the second out the bears hit a batter to bring in the third run for Rio, but TMU got out of the jam with a fly ball to shallow left caught by Morrison. Sophomore Bethany Hyde and Freshman Karley Hobbs would both see time on the mound with Hobbs collecting the win. The duo only allowed six hits and two earned runs. Junior Kaitlynn Hay led the offensive attack going 3-4 at the plate with one run scored and an rbi followed by Senior Emilia Martinet who was 2-4 with one rbi.

Game two of the Thomas University tournament the bears battled hard for eight innings but ended up just one run short. Thomas struck first with a homerun in the second inning. Thomas continued to take the lead by scoring another run in the fourth. Junior Brie Levy chipped away at the lead in the fourth with a solo homerun. Although Thomas scored a third run in the fifth, Truett responded with two runs to tie the game. The runs came from Junior Kaitlynn Hay getting on base with a hit and scoring due to a two-run homerun by Senior Milly Martinet. Both teams remained scoreless in the sixth inning. Thomas scored another run in the seventh to take the lead, but Truett answered once again. Junior Kaitlynn Hay started the inning with a single and took advantage of a wild throw that allowed her to reach second base. Freshman Karli Loudermilk drew a walk that gave the bears runners on first and second with no outs. Senior Milly Martinet reached first on a fielder's choice that advanced Kaitlynn Hay to third. With runners on first and third, Senior Reba Jones perfectly executed a squeeze bunt for a hit to score Hay and reach first base. The bears forced an extra inning where Thomas took the final lead scoring a run on two hits. The bears fell just short in a hard-fought game by a score of 5-4. Sophomore Bethany Hyde recorded the loss by allowing two runs and three hits in the two and a half innings pitched. Freshman Karley Hobbs came in for relief throwing the remaining five and a half innings allowing three runs on nine hits.

Truett McConnell bears faced the  #19 University of Mobile Rams in game one of their second day at the Thomas University tournament. Mobile struck first by scoring a run in the first and in the second. The bears struck back in the fourth inning with a solo homerun by Senior Milly Martinet. The defense held Mobile scoreless in the fifth, while the offense scored a run to tie the game. The fifth inning started by Sophomore Sara Sullivan drawing a walk and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sophomore Macey Dunaway. Freshman Karli Loudermilk scored Sullivan on a single down the left field line. Mobile took the lead again in the sixth inning by a solo homerun, and then extended the lead by two in the seventh inning. The bears' offense fought hard in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Peyton Wilson came in to pinch hit and started the inning off with a single up the middle and advanced to second by a bunt for a hit by Sophomore Jaden Morrison. Junior Kaitlynn Hay also bunted for a hit that gave the bears bases loaded with no outs. Freshman Karli Loudermilk hit a sacrifice fly ball to center that scored Wilson. The final game of the Thomas University tournament resulted in a win for the bears against Montreat College. Freshman Karley Hobbs recorded the win by not allowing Montreat to score and only allowing six hits while collecting eight strike outs. The bears came out strong striking first in the first inning. Freshman Karli Loudermilk was the bears first baserunner by getting hit by a pitch. Senior Milly Martinet hit her in by blasting a two-run homerun over the left field fence. The bears added to the lead in the second inning with Senior Sarah Horne starting the inning with a single. Junior Kaitlynn Hay advanced Horne and reached first base on an error. Freshman Karli Loudermilk advanced Horne and Hay by getting down a sacrifice bunt. Senior Milly Martinet was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Reba Jones hit a ground ball that scored Horne for the only run of that inning. The bears scored one final run in the sixth inning that started by Junior Kaitlynn Hay reaching first on an infield single. Freshman Karli Loudermilk moved Hay to second off a ground out to third. Senior Milly Martinet singled down the left field line that scored Hay. Bears' defense proved to be strong by not giving up a single error in the seven innings and keeping Montreat from scoring.
