Lady Bears’ historic season ends in NAIA opening round battle

LAKELAND, Fla. (Nov. 17, 2018) – The Truett McConnell University women's soccer team outshot No. 1 Southeastern University, No. 6 tournament seed, 20-19 and held the Fire to just one goal in the second half but ultimately fell 4-0 in the NAIA women's soccer national championships opening round.

 

The Lady Bears tallied a total of eight shots on frame in comparison to the Fire's 11. Southeastern leads the nation in total goals while TMU leads the nation in shutouts per game only allowing a total of five goals until Saturday.

 

Senior Megan McCall led with three shots on goal while freshman Lydia Williams had an excellent strike in the second half that the post. In fact, TMU earned a couple of 1 v 1's with SEU's keeper but just couldn't capitalize. Two of Southeastern's goals came from the number one player in the nation who ranks first in total goals (52), total game winning goals (11), total points (117) and points per game (5.85).

 

"I can't speak highly enough of this group of girls," Appalachian Athletic Conference Coach of the Year David McDowell said. "We have had a fantastic season and the girls showed tonight that they can compete with the best in the country. Southeastern is one of the top teams in the nations with some outstanding players. They have a good chance of winning the national title.

 

For us to come out here and put in a great performance against them says so much for our team. I am very proud of their commitment and effort. We will miss our three seniors immensely. They have furthered our program during their time here and had unbelievable senior seasons. The future of our program is very bright and we will keep getting stronger."

 

The Lady Bears end the historic season ranked first in shutouts per game (0.790), rank number two in total shutouts (15), number six in shots per game (23.89) and number 17 in shots on goal per game (11.47).

 

Senior McCall completes her campaign ranked 19th in the country in shots per game (5.26).
