CLEVELAND, Ga. (Oct. 23, 2018) – Joao Costa found the back of the net twice for the Truett McConnell University men's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon but it proved not enough as the Bears dropped a nonconference midweek game against Georgia Gwinnett College, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25 (3-2). TMU fell to 7-7-1 on the year while the Grizzlies improved to 7-5-1.
Costa's first goal came 16 minutes into the game after a perfect ball from Giovanni Giraudo. No team was capable of scoring the remaining 29 minutes of the half while the Grizzlies outshot the Bears 9-6. However, just two minutes into the second half Georgia Gwinnett connected for their first goal of the day to match the Bears' lone first half goal (1-1). TMU picked up the pace shooting seven times in comparison to the Grizzlies' eight.
Georgia Gwinnett went on to score two more times within nine minutes of each other (3-1) but Costa was capable of netting one more. Costa's second goal was scored on a free kick (3-2) but TMU was unable to fully recover as the Grizzlies secured their nonconference win over the Bears.
Costa led with eight shots, three on goal while Daniel Holt added two shots. Evan Gaffney compiled a total of four saves on night.
Up next, the Bears will host Shorter University on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 3:00 p.m., for their final regular season game.
