CLEVELAND, Ga. (Oct. 2, 2018) – The Truett McConnell University men's soccer team fought hard in an Appalachian Athletic Conference war against Union College at the TMU Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening but ultimately fell in overtime 2-1. The Bears fell to 5-4, 2-3 AAC on the year while the Bulldogs improved to 6-3-1, 3-2 AAC.
FIRST HALF HEAD TO HEAD
Both teams battled it out as the Bears took six shots in comparison to Union's five. TMU's foul just outside of the 18 led to Union's first goal of the night which was scored off of a free kick (1-0). Giovanni Giraudo and Rodrigo Goncalves both took two opportunities at the net for the remaining 26 minutes. Goncalves' shots came from corner kicks sent from Joao Costa.
SECOND HALF GOALS | OVERTIME HEARTBREAKER
Union came out into the second half with the momentum outshooting the Bears this time (8-5). However, just two minutes after Austin Manzo came off the bench an own goal took place (71st minute). Manzo's crossed ball into the box led to TMU's lone goal of the night after it slipped off the head of a Union defender. No team was able to find the back of the net to follow which forced overtime.
Six minutes in, the Bulldogs scored in the very same fashion. Union's Callum Doyle scored on a free kick securing their second AAC victory of the season over TMU.
Goncalves led with four shots while Giraudo and Victor Clemente followed with three apiece.
Overall, TMU earned three more corner kicks than Union (8-5).
