Barbourville, KY. | The Truett McConnell University men's basketball team traveled to take on No. 16 Union College in Barbourville, KY. Leading the Appalachian Athletics Conference, Union remains 1st in standings with the victory over TMU Saturday, Jan. 27th, 76-73. The Truett McConnell men's basketball team are now 14-10 on the season and 7-8 in AAC play.
The TMU bears overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and even cut No. 16 Union's lead to one in the final minute of the game, but the Bulldogs were able to slip away from the upset bid at home, 76-73. Head Coach
Jon Yeh stated, "It was a simple game of chances. I told out guys this week that if we have the same number opportunities to score, we'll do well. Turnovers were even, but they killed us on the offensive boards in the first half. They had 5 more offensive boards for the game, and we lost by 3 points."
Filipe Goncalves (14) and
Jacob Booke (13) both led the way for Truett as the duo was tough on Union in the second half while the Bears made their comeback attempt. Despite the Bulldog's outscoring TMU in second chance points, the Bears fought tooth-and-nail to still have a chance to win at the buzzer.
TMU fell as much as 16 points in the second half before fighting their way back to a 2 point game with three seconds left in play. After Union's Jackson Stuart knocked down a free throw to help hold a three point lead, TMU was forced to shoot a contested three in the final seconds.
TMU finished with four players to finish in double figures, Filipe Goncalves (14),
Jacob Booke (13),
Christian Davis (12), and
Calvin White with a double double 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The TMU Bears will be back in action this upcoming Tuesday back home in the Bear Cave against St. Andrews University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
