YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Truett McConnell baseball team scored five runs in the top of the first but couldn't hang on as the Young Harris Mountain Lions defeated the Bears, 14-7, Tuesday night.
The Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk to
Austin Bishop and a single by
Chris Carden,
Patrick Overstreet doubled to right field to plate the game's first run. Two pitches later,
Tate Gaines plated Carden on a RBI groundout, and then
Josh Johnston brought home Overstreet to give TMU a 3-0 lead.
With the bases loaded later in the inning,
Casey Guilliams perfectly executed a sacrifice squeeze bunt to give the Bears the four-run lead.
Davis Dasher also squeezed in a run off a bunt to end the scoring in the inning.
Young Harris responded, however, with single runs in the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Where the Mountain Lions really did their damage, though, was in a nine-run fourth inning outburst that saw 14 YHC players step to the plate.
The Bears scored their final two runs in the sixth inning, one on a Carden RBI single and the other being walked in.
Carden finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate, while Johnston was a perfect 1-for-1 with three walks, a run scored and two RBI.
The Bears will hit the road as they jump back into AAC play to take on Bluefield in a Saturday-Sunday three-game set. Saturday will be a doubleheader set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
