Softball Splits AAC Home Opening Doubleheader With Point

CLEVELAND | The Truett McConnell softball team defeated Point University in game one of an AAC doubleheader, 7-3, and had the tying run 60 feet away in the second game, falling 7-6 to the Skyhawks. The Bears are now 14-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The Bears scored four runs in the third inning of game one off of three hits and a Skyhawk error. The inning began with a leadoff walk to Peyton Wilson and, after a pitching change, a Sarah Horne walk. After Kaitlynn Hay loaded the bases, the Bears pushed two across on a fielding error and the second on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Reba Jones. Olivia Darley singled on the next pitch to bring home the fourth run of the inning.

TMU extended its lead in the fourth inning when Milly Martinet doubled to left center to score Hay and Sara Sullivan and make the score 6-1. Point got two runs back in the fifth, but Olivia Darley scored the final run of the game in the bottom half on a Wilson single up the middle.

Taylor Nix earned the complete game win, scattering six hits and three runs while striking out three.

In game two, the Bears struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a Martinet double to score Sullivan to take the early lead.

After a Skyhawk three-run third, the Bears responded in the bottom half to retake the lead on a Martinet two-run bomb to left field.

Point tied the game in the fourth and took a 7-4 lead in the sixth inning. TMU scored one in the bottom of the sixth and seventh before the Skyhawks clamped down for the win.

TMU will host Bryan on Tuesday in another AAC doubleheader with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
