Conference Win Streak Extends to 5 for Men’s Basketball

CLEVELAND, GA. |
The Truett McConnell Men's Basketball Team received another AAC conference victory against Point University Wednesday night in The Bear Cave. The Bears are now 5-2 in AAC Conference play thanks to a 5 game win streak and 10-2 for the season.

Both teams got off to a slow start on Jack P. Nix Elementary School Night, as the score was just 6-6 in the first 7 minutes of the game. Early foul trouble from the Bears allowed Point to climb out to a 21-9 lead with just over 9 minutes to go in the first half. A dagger 3-pointer from Christian Davis, a 3-point play from Stephen Stuart, a step back 3 from Darius Thrower, and a 3-pointer from Myles Monroe—a 12-0 run got the Bears right back into the ball game, 21-21. Solid play from Filipe Goncalves down the stretch helped the Bears gain a 32-30 advantage going into the locker room at the half.

The Bears were able to keep the lead in the 2nd half, but never was able to lead by more than 7 points. Point fought hard in the 2nd half, continuing to cut into the Bear's lead, as the score was 63-61 TMU with just over 4 minutes remaining in the game. David Campbell, Mario Westbrooks, and Christian Davis all provided big scoring down the stretch. Point was able to cut the TMU lead to 75-73 with 3 seconds to go and possession of the ball. All eyes were on Point's Lawrence Castor as his half-court shot hit the glass and bounced off the rim, securing a narrow 75-73 win for TMU. The Bears finished the 2nd half shooting 54% from the field, much better than 29% from the 1st half.

Coach Jon Yeh stated, "We knew it would be a tough game coming down from the high last week. It was a true trap game, but Point is very good and they will win some games in the conference very soon. We made just enough plays to win it. David Campbell's scoring was excellent from inside and outside. Stephen Stuart gave us some great hustle plays in the first half. His effort really energized us. Somehow we had the lead with three starters in foul trouble. It's great to be 5-2 in the league, but it's even better to have a mini-break now with finals starting. We definitely need this time off to study and re-focus. But somehow, someway we found a way to win when we played really poorly."

The team will have some time off to prepare for finals, and will be back in action Tuesday, December 12th to take on Toccoa Falls College in The Bear Cave as they look to extend their win streak to 6. The Bears previously defeated Toccoa Falls 108-75 to open the season. Tip-off is set for 6 P.M.
