LAURINBURG, NC. | Big time free throw by Sophomore
Darius Thrower puts the Bears up by one with three seconds left in overtime to eventually seal the win Thursday night against AAC rival St. Andrews University. The Bears defeated the knights 73-71 in overtime.
The two teams battled point-to-point the entire first half with the Bears only leading by 2 points going into halftime. Going into an intense second half, SAU broke out in an eight point lead until Senior David Campbell drained a three behind the arch. The knights led the second half all the way up to the five minute mark when sharp shooter
Darius Thrower knocked down a three to take the lead putting the bears up by two. Campbell stepped up as a senior with the help of freshman
Myles Monroe offensively in the last two minutes of play. The bears up by three points with .4 seconds left to go, Christian Lathan from St. Andrews drilled a three to send the two teams into overtime.
Immediately senior
Mario Westbrooks stepped up to knock two free throws down in the first 13 seconds of play in overtime. Furthermore, the bears got up as much as four points and fought to seal the win on the road. Head Coach
Jon Yeh stated, "It was a complete 'grind-it-out' game. All conference road games are. And St. Andrews is always a tough place to play. We played with good energy the whole game. The guys on the floor . . . The guys on the bench . . . Everyone contributed to this win. Defensively, I thought we were pretty solid all night long. There were a few squirrelly possessions where we almost got the loose ball, but it resulted in an easy basket for them. And I felt we ran pretty good offense in the second half but just didn't make the shot. A huge key was that we were solid handling the ball. Only 7 turnovers in 45 minutes is pretty good."
Again leading offensively for TMU was senior David Campbell finishing with 21 points. Also finishing strong was
Christian Davis with 17 while
Mario Westbrooks came up with a double double, 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bears will be back home this up coming Saturday following the women's game Dec. 2 in the Bearcave. TMU will be in search for their fourth straight AAC victory against Union College at 7:30 p.m.
