Women's Basketball Completes Comeback in 58-52 Upset of Union

CLEVELAND | The Truett McConnell women's basketball team trailed for a total of 37 minutes and 39 seconds, including the first 27:13, to Union College Wednesday night but pulled off the upset in a thrilling 58-52 win over the Bulldogs. With the win, the Bears are now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Bears trailed for the entire first half as the Bulldogs, who were receiving votes in the last national poll, jumped out to the early 17-11 lead after one quarter. The TMU defense then clamped down, holding Union to just nine points in the second period.

TMU took its first lead of the night at the 2:47 mark in the third quarter when Quinlan Hughes capped off the initial comeback with a powerful move inside to take a 33-32 lead. The two teams traded baskets into the fourth quarter before Union again jumped out to a seven-point lead at 52-45 with 2:58 left.

The Bears then closed the game on a 13-0 run, giving Union no room to shoot, much less make a basket. TMU made its last seven free throws to get the win.

Ariana Sanders led all scorers with 19 points, while Hughes dominated on the floor, totaling 15 points and 13 boards.

TMU will hit the road for an AAC matchup with Allen on Saturday the next time the Bears take the floor. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Columbia, South Carolina.
