Box Score NASHViLLE, Tenn. | The Truett McConnell men's team opened the 2016-17 campaign with a 61-60 win on the road at Welch College Saturday afternoon.
"Definitely an ugly win, but we found a way down the stretch to make some plays on both ends," said head coach
Jon Yeh. "We have a lot of new components - new faces, new defense, new offense - and we weren't always on the same page. I think there were times when we had four new players on the floor at the same time."
After David Campbell hit a three-pointer early on, the Bears led 14-3. The Bears then went on an 8-2 run capped by a
Brandon Cerezola three with 11 minutes left in the first half.
The Bears were able to hold on to the lead from that point until the four-minute mark in the second half when Welch took a 60-58 lead. The Bears, behind Campbell and
Mario Westbrooks at the free-throw line and solid defense, held Welch scoreless the rest of the game on the way to the win.
Campbell led the Bears with 18 points on 6-12 shooting. Westbrooks added 11 points and eight rebounds, while freshman
Kai Lambert contributed 14 points and nine boards. TMU held a 40-30 advantage on the boards in the contest.
The Bears will look to make it two-in-a-row when they take on Toccoa Falls on Tuesday, November 1, at 8 p.m.
