Men’s Soccer Dominates Point University
Box Score The Truett-McConnell Men's Soccer team took to the field Wednesday afternoon for a pivotal early season inter-conference matchup with the SkyHawks from Point University. The Bears, under the tutelage of new Head Coach Rob Miller, have been on a roll of late. Entering the game, the Bears were winners of five out of their last six games. In fact, the only game the Bears didn't win outright, was a double-overtime scoreless tie against Piedmont College early last week.
With the exception of an opening loss on the road in their first game and the scoreless tie against Piedmont, the Bears have been having their way with the competition. After turning heads last week with a 3-1 win over 16th ranked St. Andrews University, for the first time in the history of the college, the Bears received votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches poll. An exceptional feat, considering Head Coach Rob Miller has only been at Truett-McConnell for a matter of months. "I think our team chemistry has been the key to our success thus far," said Head Coach Rob Miller in a recent interview. "The players work hard for each other, and everyone is staying positive."
As the Bears took to the field Wednesday, it was evident early on that they had every intention of staying true to their winning ways. After a scoreless first half, that featured exceptional defensive play by both teams, the Bears turned to their offense, and senior midfielder Penzi Kakoma was the first to pierce the net off an assist from senior James Serpas. The goal was the first of the night and propelled the Bears into the first lead of the night, but they were not done with their offensive pressure.
The Bears' second goal came from freshman Tyrik Francis from Covington, Georgia. who broke free and scored off an assist from senior Josh Moffet. Not to be outdone, senior midfielder Josh Bargary tacked on another goal late in the second period, giving the Bears what proved to be an insurmountable lead.
With a 3-0 lead and the clock in their favor, the Bears' defense shutdown the SkyHawks for the remainder of the game, helping to secure the 3-0 victory. With the win, the Bears improved to 6-1-1 on the year, and 2-0 in AAC play. The win also moves the Bears' home record to 4-0-1 for the season.
Next up on the schedule for the Bears will be the Cavaliers from Montreal College. The two AAC rivals are scheduled to face-off this Saturday, September 26, at home in Cleveland. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 pm. With a victory, the Bears will most certainly receive strong consideration to crack the NAIA top 25 Coaches poll. A feat that has never been achieved by any Truett-McConnell soccer team to date.
