Bears Soccer Takes Down Nationally Ranked Knights
Box Score The Truett-McConnell Men's Soccer program opened conference play this weekend in a big way, as they welcomed the defending Appalachian Athletic Conference Champions and nationally ranked (16th) Knights from St. Andrews University to campus.
It was evident from the first whistle that the Bears were not going to be intimidated by the Knights and had every intention of letting them know that they intend to stake their own claim among the conference's elite this season. The Bears jumped out early in the 1st period off an unassisted goal by senior Andre Williams. The Bears' defense rose to the occasion in the 1st period, keeping the Knights off the scoreboard and helping the Bears enjoy a 1-0 lead at the end of the 1st period.
The Bears went on to add two more goals during the second period, with the first one coming off the foot of junior Josiah Saydee who managed to break free off an assist from senior Michael Antoniewicz. The Bears added a third goal late from sophomore Houston Kent, who pierced the net off an assist from senior Josh Moffet.
With the exception of a lone goal, the Bears' defense held the Knights in check and ultimately walked away from the contest with an impressive 3-1 win over the reigning conference champions. "Today was an outstanding game for us," said Head Coach Rob Miller immediately following the Bears victory. "This was probably the best we've played in terms of putting both offense and defense together. We're really on a roll playing with a lot of confidence, and that's been the key to our success."
With the win, the Bears improved to 5-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. They also improved their home record to 3-0-1 on the season. The Bears will look to continue their winning ways, as they welcome Point University to campus on Wednesday, September 23rd for a pivotal early season conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 pm.
