Box Score 4 After defeating #24 Union College 6-0 on the road Saturday in Appalachian Athletic Conference action, the Truett-McConnell Bears dropped a 3-2 contest on Tuesday to NCAA DII opponent, Southern Wesleyan University.
On Saturday, the Bears' starting pitcher, Luke Henderson, threw a complete game to shut out the Union Bulldogs over nine innings while allowing just three hits and striking out five. It was the second top 25 opponent the Bears have defeated this season. Earlier in the year, the Bears defeated #6 Georgia Gwinnett College (#5 at the time) 4-3 on the road. Union entered Saturday's contest at #24 and boasts the best record in the AAC at 10-2. Henderson's performance earned him AAC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Southern Wesleyan University came to Cleveland, Georgia to take on the Bears on Tuesday and left with the 3-2 victory. The Warriors plated two runs in the top of the second inning when they belted three consecutive doubles. TMC starting pitcher, Cody Gable, would settle down and hold the Warriors scoreless over the next three frames, but would later surrender an unearned run to begin the top of the sixth inning.
Down 3-0, the Bears plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Chris Carden led off the inning with a single, and Peyton Fore followed by drawing a walk. An error by SWU's pitcher allowed Tate Gaines to reach first base safely on a bunt resulting in a bases-loaded, no-outs situation for the Bears' offense. SWU induced a ground ball on the next play and turned a double-play to minimize the Bears' threat. Chris Carden scored on the batted ball, and Peyton Fore later scored on a wild pitch. SWU retired the Bears in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
The Bears will host AAC opponent, Montreat College, this weekend for a Friday contest at 3 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.
