Holland’s Heroics Propel Bears to Win

The Truett-McConnell Bears Basketball team traveled to Waleska, Georgia on Wednesday night to take on the Eagles from Reinhardt University in a key AAC divisional match-up. The fans who braved the frigid temperatures that have gripped most of Northern Georgia over the last few days saw perhaps one of the best AAC games of the season. Point guard Xavier Holland ensured that the Bear fans who made the road trip returned to Cleveland in good spirits, as his late game heroics helped propel the Bears to a 92-91 victory over the Eagles.
Holland raced up the sideline and went the length of the court in the final 6.5 seconds of the game to score the game winning lay-up as time expired on the game clock. "I'm really happy for Xavier," said Head Coach Jon Yeh. "Early in the year, he struggled scoring off penetration, but on this occasion he was determined to finish at the rim."
Andretti Lloyd notched a 3-point play with less than 30 seconds left to give Truett a 1-point lead. Lloyd had a put-back basket of a Rudy Deaza miss, and he sunk his free throw after being fouled on the play. However, Reinhardt countered with a pair of free throws by Justin Zachary to go up 1 point with just 6.5 seconds remaining, which set the stage for Holland's heroics.
Jr Hurst scored a career-best 22 points on the night, going 6 for 8 from the 3-point line, He was especially hot early in the game, hitting 5 for 6 in the first half. J'Quayveon Williams also played a key role in the win, netting 1o points along with 5 rebounds.
"When your double-double machine is limited due to foul trouble and you can still manage to come away with a win, that just says a lot for the depth of our team," said Yeh immediately following the dramatic win. "I thought freshman Marquise Bumps had a great second half, corralling 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. We also got a huge boost from freshman Daniel Beausejour who put up 8 points in the 2nd half."
The win keeps the Bears in a virtual tie with Milligan for the number 2 seed at the AAC tournament. The Bears can do no worse than 3rd place in the AAC regular season and could leapfrog Milligan with a win at home on Saturday coupled with a loss by Milligan.
The Bears' final regular season game of the season will be this Saturday, February 21st, at home against Bryan College. The game is scheduled to tip at 5:00 PM. All gate proceeds from the game will go towards Cystic Fibrosis research.
