Baseball Tops #6 Georgia Gwinnett 4-3 on Tuesday
Box Score The Truett-McConnell Baseball team scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to eventually defeat #6 Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) by a final score of 4-3. The Bears are now 6-5 overall, after handing the Grizzlies their third loss of the season at 8-3.
GGC took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning, but would be limited to single runs in the sixth and eighth innings by the Bears' defense throughout the remainder of the game. Senior
Cody Gable relieved starting pitcher
Wyatt Holloway in the first inning after Holloway was forced to exit earlier when he took a batted ball off his throwing arm. Gable proceeded to throw 6.1 innings of relief on his way to his second win of the season. The lefty allowed seven hits and surrendered just one run with six strikeouts.
Luke Henderson came in to pitch another two solid innings for the Bears to earn the save.
Offensively, Truett-McConnell forced four runs across in the top of the sixth inning to claim a 4-1 lead. Previously, the Bears stranded the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings. The big sixth inning began when
Chris Stevens led off with a single up the middle. With one out,
Tate Gaines singled to third allowing Stevens to advance to second.
Austin Thomas pinch ran for Gaines, and
Sean Cheshire lined a single to righ field to load the bases for
Andrew Fogarty. Fogarty delivered with a big two-RBI double into left-center scoring Stevens and Thomas. With Cheshire on third, leadoff hitter Trent Little added to the Bears' lead with a RBI single to center.
Peyton Fore kept the rally alive with a RBI single to right field allowing Fogarty to score the final run of the inning.
Fore led the Bears with a 4-for-5 effort, while
Chris Carden,
Tate Gaines, and
Sean Cheshire accounted for two hits each. Truett-McConnell banged out 15 hits in the game for an early season team best.
The Bears will face NAIA opponent Fisher College (Mass.) this weekend when the Falcons travel south to Cleveland, Georgia.
