Slow Start and Turnovers Plague Lady Bears
Box Score The Lady Bears went into Wednesday's game with hopes of grabbing a win against divisional foe St. Andrews University. However, a slow start in the opening minutes proved too much for the Bears to overcome as they fell to St. Andrews by a score of 51-63. St. Andrews opened the game with a 16-0 run before junior Helen Simoes broke the Bears' scoreless drought by hitting a jump shot in the paint at the 9 minute mark of the first half. Despite the sluggish start, the Bears continued to battle and went into the locker room at the half trailing by a score of 22-34.
After a few half time adjustments, the Bears returned to the court in the second half and held their own going toe to toe with the Knights. Helen Simoes led the Lady Bears in scoring with 15 points and 8 rebounds in her 34 minutes of play. However, costly turnovers and trouble at the free throw line prevented the Bears from climbing back from the early deficit. "I felt like we beat them in just about every statistical category except turnovers and on the score board," said Head Coach Matt Sanders. "We played extremely hard and played great defense in the second half, but we just couldn't stop turning the ball over."
The Bears will look to get back on the right track at home this Saturday, January 10th, as they take on Reinhardt College. The game is scheduled to tip at 2:00 PM.
