Bears Win Big on the Road in Virginia
Box Score The men's Bears Basketball team traveled to Bluefield, Virginia on Saturday night to take on the Bluefield College Rams in an important NAIA Conference matchup between the two schools. The Bears used strong shooting from the floor and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to help secure the tough 69-63 win on the road against the Rams.
Rudy Deaza and JR Hurst led the Bears into the locker room at halftime, each scoring 8 points in the first half. The Bears shot 37.9% from the field on 11 of 29 shots prior to halftime. Despite their good play early in the game, the Bears went into the locker room trailing 30-32 at the half.
In the second half, the Bears were led by J'Quavyeon Williams, who collected yet another double double for the year, scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of playing time during the course of the game. David Campbell came off the bench and made the most of his 18 minutes on the hardwood, pouring in 12 points for the game. However, it was strong free throw shooting from point guard Xavier Holland in the final seconds of the game that helped seal the victory for the Bears. Holland, a Virginia native who grew up in Richmond, hit 4 critical free throws under pressure in the final 12 seconds to lockdown the 69-63 road victory. The win pushes the Bears' record to 8-7 overall and 4-4 on the road for season. The 8 wins for the Bears now doubles the entire win total of 4 from last year.
"This was a good road win for our program," said Head Coach Jon Yeh shortly after the conclusion of the game. "Xavier Holland had a great game in his home state, hitting some critical free throws for us in the last seconds of the game, and David Campbell was huge for us off the bench." The Bears will turn their attention now towards their next opponent, St. Andrews University. The game is set for Wednesday night, January 7th, in front of the home crowd in Cleveland, Georgia. The two teams are set to tip off at 7:30 pm.
