Haskett Helps the Lady Bears Power Past Montreat

    Junior forward Rhande Haskett helped the Lady Bears Basketball team power past the Montreat Cavaliers, earning the Bears their first road victory of the season while stretching their winning streak to three straight. Haskett led all scorers with 20 points on 7 of 13 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the foul line. She also grabbed 11 rebounds and 5 assists during her 39 minutes of playing time on the hardwood. Haskett's strong play on the defensive side of the ball helped move her into 2nd place in rebounding at the end of the night within the AAC conference.Â
     The Lady Bears shot 48.15% from the floor in the first half en route to a 31-29 halftime lead. During halftime, the Bears were challenged by their Head Coach Matt Sanders to stay strong and finish the drill during the second half. "I challenged them at the half to play better and stressed the importance of someone stepping up to lead," said Sanders shortly after the game concluded. It was evident in the Bears' play during the second half that they accepted the challenge put forth by their Coach.Â
     The Bears returned to the court and shot 52.63% from the field during the second half on 10 of 19 shots. Following the lead of Haskett, freshman guard Anna Murr had another big game pouring in 19 points and 5 rebounds in the midst of her 37 minutes of playing time. Veronika Brooks also played big for the Lady Bears by grabbing 12 points, 3 rebounds, and a steal while roaming the court for during her 26 minutes of action. Due to the strong play across the board during the second half, the Lady Bears outscored the Cavaliers 39-32 during the half securing a 70-61 victory. Â
   "Rhande Haskett has been playing great," said Coach Sanders. "She had a stellar second half and made key shots in addition to crucial free throws in the final minutes to help seal the road win for us."  Â
    The win marked the third consecutive victory for the Lady Bears and their second straight conference win. The Bears will look to keep their winning ways going Wednesday, January 28th as they take on Tennessee Wesleyan College in Cleveland in front of the home crowd. The game is scheduled to tip at 5:30 PM.Â
