Women’s Soccer holds off Milligan College 3-2

CLEVELAND, Ga., (TMSports) –On Saturday, September 20, the Truett-McConnell Women's Soccer Team hosted Milligan College in the first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) match of the year. The game had a wild finish as the Lady Bears defeat Milligan in a roaring finish 3-2.

The Buffaloes got on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute when a long diagonal ball was crossed in from the left side of the field from about 25 yards out; the ball gave the Lady Bears defense trouble and would eventually find its way in the back of the net. However, the Lady Bears would only have to wait five minutes to get the equalizer. The equalizer came on a brilliant header by senior, Meagan Taylor. The goal was assisted by junior, Jo Cook who was able to beat her man down the sideline and play in a great cross that was met by the leaping Taylor. The lead did not last long though as just a few minutes later the visitors would jump ahead in the 21th minute by a well timed header of their own.

The Bears came roaring out of the gate to start the second half. The Lady Bears immediately took control of the half and began to put pressure on the Milligan back four creating several goal-scoring chances. The breakthrough finally came in the 58th minute when sophomore, Paige Williams was able to score off a corner that found its way in the net. The scoring wouldn't stop there. In the 78th minute, the Lady Bears once again scored off a corner. Williams stepped up and hit a great ball to the back of the 6 yard box that was nailed home for the winner by fellow sophomore, Meredith Mellard.

"Although we were down at the half, the coaching staff felt like the girls had played well overall in the first half," said Head Women's Soccer Coach David McDowell. "Our team was able to possess and create several opportunities in front of the goal. We were confident that they would breakthrough in the second half to secure the win."

The Lady Bears return to action Wednesday, September 24th when they visit Reinhardt University for a 4:15 kick-off.
