Johnson and Wales University falls to TMC 1-0

CLEVELAND, Ga. (TMSports ) - Johnson and Wales University fell victim to Truett-McConnell as the Bears accumulated another victory in the Den.

The Johnson and Wales Wildcats held the majority of the possession in the first half of the game but the Bears defense held strong and diluted any attack the Wildcats threw at them. JWU saw their first chance as they took a swinging corner that was met by the head of one of JWU's players but was easily saved by TMC's co-captain and goalkeeper Craig Stephenson. The Bears first real chance to score came in the first half from Rudy Vazquez who picked the ball up at the half way line and drove at three defenders. He worked past two defenders before taking a heavy touch past the third which saw the ball roll into the on rushing JWU keeper.

The second half started much like the first with a disciplined defensive TMC side soaking up the pressure from JWU's attacks. Stephon Williams and Matthew Robertshaw were dominant in the air which prevented JWU causing any real threat when the ball was pumped into the box. There was a heart pounding moment for the Bears when JWU's midfield worked the ball well around the box before finding the feet of their striker who shot wide from 18 yards. Head Coach Damien Westfield's men poised a threat on the counter attack all day with the pace of Houston Kent, Vazquez and Andre Williams in the attack. It wasn't until the 75th minute before fans saw TMC's Kent and Vazquez cause confusion in the JWU defense which allowed Kent to slide in Vazquez whose shot was parried wide by the keeper. Josh Bargary came on with 10 minutes to go and caused a threat until the final whistle; Bargary broke the deadlock on the 87th minute as Vazquez was taken down inside the 18 yard box and a penalty was awarded. JWU was reduced to 10 men on the field. Bargary calmly stepped up to take the penalty kick and placed the ball in the bottom left hand corner for the go ahead goal. This leaves TMC undefeated at the Den and onto a two game winning streak going into Wednesday's home match against Brewton Parker College.

"We were disciplined today and stuck to the game plan that was set out from the start. We knew if we could get key players behind the ball, a chance would come our way," Stephenson said.

Assistant Coach Scott Davidson added, "it was a fantastic all round effort from the boys who played as team and deserved the win."
