Lady Bears Claw Past Hiwassee

Alyssa Lawson scored 16 points to lead all scorers as the Bears edged Hiwassee College 61-60 in a non-conference game Monday night (Dec. 15). 

Truett-McConnell took a 33-24 lead into the locker room at the half due primarily to strong defense and 2nd chance points. The Bears also had strong play down low, outscoring Hiwassee 22-6 with points in the paint. 

Despite their half time lead, the score got close late and the Bears relied on a strong performance from their bench to help claw past Hiwassee for the win in front of the home crowd. The Bears' bench players outscored the Tigers 27-15 for the game and 12-6 in second half. 

Rhande Haskett and Monica Hammond also put up good numbers to help the Bears secure the win. Haskett scored 12 points and also had a key block in her 20 minutes on the floor. Meanwhile, Hammond put up 11 points and had 2 steals during her 32 minutes of play. Veronika Brooks led all Bears with minutes played, tallying 38 minutes on the court for the night. 

"The girls fought really hard down the stretch and refused to lose tonight," said Head Coach Matt Sanders. "We're continuing to improve each night, and we're all looking forward to finishing up this semester with a strong showing on Wednesday against Columbia International."

The Bears improved to 3-8 overall and will travel to Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday to take on Columbia International. The victory help the Bears improve to 2-4 for the season in front of the home crowd.
