Toccoa, GA - This past Thursday evening, the Truett-McConnell women's basketball team travelled to Toccoa Falls College to face the Screaming Eagles in a non-conference game. The Bears would experience their first victory of the 2014-2015 season, defeating the Screaming Eagles 52-37.
The Lady Bears started the game strong, establishing their inside dominance in the opening minutes. Height was an advantage to the Bears, which caused trouble for the Screaming Eagles to connect on its perimeter looks.Â
Offensively, the Lady Bears pounded the ball on the inside as they took advantage in the low block of the Screaming Eagles. The women shot 43% in the first half, most of which came from inside the paint. Limiting the opposition to shooting 5-26 in the first half, the Lady Bears went into halftime with a strong lead of 32-15.Â
The second half was much slower-paced than the first, leading to a drastically lower shooting percentage for the Lady Bears. Despite the Screaming Eagles attempt to overcome their first half deficit, the Bears maintained the lead for the remainder of the game.Â
On the night, sophomore Heather Shore scored 11 points for the Lady Bears, while teammate Rhande Haskett contributed 11 of the team's 43 total rebounds.Â
Women's basketball Head Coach Matt Sanders said, "The girls played well from the beginning. We are really focusing on the details and I thought they did a great job of that tonight. We played the best yet as a team."
The Lady Bears are now 1-2 on the season, and 0-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. They will play their next contest at 2:00 PM this Saturday, November 8th, as they travel to Madisonville, TN to face non-conference opponent Hiwassee College.
