West Point, GA - The Truett-McConnell women's soccer team was paired with the Point Skyhawks for the Quarterfinals of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament.
The game would be a rematch of the 2-2 draw between the two teams only two weeks prior to Saturday's first round game. The Lady Bears had a great week of training in preparation for the game, and appeared ready to continue their good season into the playoffs.
Saturday's game started off tense and compact, neither team wanting to make the first mistake. Throughout the majority of the first half the two teams battled for possession in the midfield. Although the half would end 0-0, the Lady Bears felt confident that they still held the upper hand over the host Skyhawks.
The second half started out with both teams feeling each other out. However, it would be the Lady Bears with the first real chance of the game when freshmen
Katey Griggs beat the center back and hit a well-timed shot that the keeper was able to save. The two teams once again battled back and forth, yet it would be the Skyhawks that would find the first goal of the game in the 72nd minute.
This would not be the first time the Bears would fall behind in a game, first having several comebacks earlier in the season. The Bears changed their formation and personnel to try to ignite a spark for the tying goal; however, it would not come. Although the Lady Bears put forth a valiant effort, they were unable to move on to the next round in the AAC Tournament. With this final loss, the Lady Bears finish the season 8-6-5.
Head Women's Soccer Coach
David McDowell said, "It is a disappointing way to end the season as we had high hopes to do well in the tournament. We just didn't have it in us today and it's a shame that our season has ended this way. It is a great group of girls here and I have loved working with them this season."
