Women's Soccer Ties with Montreat in Double Overtime

Box Score Montreat, NC - On Wednesday, October 15th the Truett-McConnell women's soccer team went on the road to face the Montreat Cavaliers in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup.

In the first half, the game started with both teams playing fairly even. However, in the 28th minute, it was Montreat who struck first, scoring against the Bears on a well-placed finish off of a perfectly-set piece. The first half came to a close with the host Cavaliers leading 1-0.

The start of the second half saw a change in momentum as the Lady Bears came flying out of the gate with an aggressive offensive attack. The Bears began to put pressure on the backline of the Cavaliers, creating several very good chances that forced the Montreat keeper into several great saves.

In the 55th minute, the Bears broke through the Cavalier defense as sophomore Bianca Clark put the ball past the Montreat keeper. Throughout the remainder of the second half, the Lady Bears continued to push for victory. Despite several chances, the sound of the buzzer sent both teams into overtime as the score remain tied 1-1.

In the first overtime, the Bears once again challenged the Cavalier defense by creating numerous chances. Their efforts were not enough to overcome Montreat's keeper, as the Lady Bears could not find the back of the net.

In the second overtime, Montreat came out hard and pushed forward with their offensive attack. The Cavaliers forced the Lady Bears freshmen goalkeeper, Anna Scogin, to make a great one-handed save with only 2 minutes remaining in the second overtime. At the sound of the final buzzer, the AAC game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Head Coach David McDowell said, "It's always a great battle with Montreat. It's a very healthy rivalry and we enjoy playing them. They had control of the first half, so we decided to change a few things up at half time. We saw a big difference in our play in the second half, and definitely played with more desire and belief. Unfortunately, we just couldn't get that second goal we needed to secure the win."

The Lady Bears had 27 shots in this game, compared to only 16 for the Cavaliers.

"I still believe we have yet to see our best game yet. There is a lot of ability and determination in this group, and with each game we get a little closer to fulfilling our potential," said Coach McDowell.

The Lady Bears are now 6-4-3 overall, and 4-2-1 in AAC play. The Lady Bears return to action this Saturday, October 18th at 2:00pm when they host the Lions of Bryan College.
