TMC’s Lady Bears Volleyball team defeats Wesleyan College
CLEVELAND, Ga. (TMSports) – Truett-McConnell College's Lady Bears Volleyball team grabbed their second win for the 2013 season against Wesleyan College, September 25.
"The match was back and forth from the start," said head coach Kevia Elkins about the five set rally. "In my opinion, we still did not play our best, but we played good enough to win."
Despite mental mistakes made by the Lady Bears, the team never gave up and it paid off. TMC won 3-2 with scores of: 22-25, 25-19,19-25, 25-22,15-13.
Elkins complimented the resilience of Wesleyan's team: "They had a lot of fight in them and never gave up. There were seven of them and 16 of us, and not once were they intimidated by us at all."
The Lady Bears were ahead at the beginning of the match but allowed Wesleyan to re-take the lead for a first set win. Despite this disappointment, the second set was played with "more confidence and purpose" by the Bears, Elkins said.
"I told them to stop worrying so much about what Wesleyan was doing and focus on what we were doing. I think we finally started doing that and it showed in our overall performance and our attitude."
Round two went to the Bears, but not able to fight fatigue and the mental aspect of the game, the Lady Bears fell to Wesleyan in the third.
"During sets four and five I was very proud of the way we fought," Elkins said. "For the first time all year, when we were down we didn't just accept losing as our fate."
While the win was a total team effort, Elkins complemented the defensive play from senior captain,
Sarah Conort, and freshman
Madison Miller. "
Brittany Foster had a great overall match, Elkins said, "while
Jessica Epting,
Liz Norton,
Helen Royal and
Cara Grobbelaar were huge on the net."
Elkins believes her team now understands their potential and hopes it will make a difference in the Montreat game, September 27.
